City History
The Shoshone Indians once used South El Monte as their campsite and watering hole. During the California Gold Rush, the area was first settled by the Thompson Party. In fact, the El Monte Township was founded by the Thompson family during the late 1860s. In the early 20th century, the city began to develop faster and was incorporated in 1958.

South El Monte, California, in Los Angeles county, is 1 miles SW of El Monte, California and 11 miles E of Los Angeles, California. The city is located in the Los Angeles – Long Beach metropolitan area. Cal Poly Pomona University and Azusa Pacific University are both approximately 15 minutes away.
